Paint and Light

The house is still not quite ours yet. Hoping to get into it this weekend. If we do close on time, we plan to paint this weekend. I'd love to have painters put a fresh coat on each room, but I think given time and cost constraints we'll have to stick to painting ourselves and only the two rooms that we feel are absolutely necessary.

The first room is the "larger" of the two bedrooms. Each room in the house is quite cozy and this is particularly true of the bedrooms. One of them is currently painted a pink and yellow vertical stripe. While cute for the current owner's two little girls, it doesn't quite suit us. The other room is the very green dining room. The color is kind of likeable, but again, not quite right for us. I'd love to do a taupy, muddy gray for our bedroom, but am a bit hesitant given its small size. That may make it seem even tinier. Here are a couple of pics where it works nicely, though.

As for the dining room, for now we'll probably paint it a neutral creamy white, but someday soon I hope to put up this awesome paper from Farrow + Ball. It is from their Lotus Papers collection. Maybe I am getting too into that muddy gray? I just love this paper.

Was also thinking about the front porch and front door. The house is a light gray, which works for the seaside location, I think. It currently has a red -burgandy door. Typically, I like the burgandy and gray combo, but I think I'd like to get a little cottage-y here and go with a blue that pops a bit more. I like the deep cobalt colors. There is a hue from Ben Moore called Southern Belle that might be nice.

Speaking of the front porch, if we paint the door blue, we'll need to paint the floor, too. Probably a dark gray. I'd also love to add one of these Moravian Star fixtures. They are supposed to protect your home and bring good luck to your family. I think it would look cool as a front porch light fixture. Turns out, friends have one in their bedroom! It looks great. (Notice the lovely muddy gray paint color on the walls!)

getting started

we're getting ready for our move. feeling pretty anxious to get settled in to our new digs. can't wait to figure out where everything will go. i kind of love unpacking and deciding where to put things.

in the meantime, i've been preoccupied with design ideas. i would love to get retro appliances in the kitchen, starting with a cool fridge. loving the jadite and buttercup yellow options from Big Chill Fridge. can't you picture one of these fridges in our new kitchen?

also trying to decide on some themes to use as guidance for decorating. we want to be somewhat true to the home's bungalow origins, beach-y location, and early 1900s construction (1913, to be precise).

the bathroom will need new flooring. have always loved those honeycomb tiles, but also liking this basket weave option. i wonder if we can get the nice black border put in. it would mean removing the bottom row of tiles.
